Mactassos: Greece in Glasgow
Glasgow Food - West End
Disclaimer
Now I wanna start of by saying that I’ve never been to Greece before, so I don’t actually know first hand if this food is the real deal. However, I have been told that this rivals any gyro that Greece has to offer. (The person was Greek, so I’ll take their word for it).
Where?
Slap bang in the middle of the West End, just after the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum if you’re walking up from Partick. It’s in Kelvin Way, which is looking pedestrianised these days, so don’t be surprised if a few more food trucks end up down there in the future if it stays like that. It’s also just around the corner from the University of Glasgow, as well as being across the street from Kelvingrove Park (right by the tennis courts and skate park entrance). I can say that’s one thing that the city doesn’t see much of, maybe because of our beautiful weather most of the year, but that’s street food vendors.
Do we think there might be room for more food trucks and street vendors in Glasgow?
The beauty of this location makes it easy for you to mosey around and see the West End without having to break much of a sweat. Me and my mate, Harry ended up going for a stroll across the road and set up shop on a picnic table in the park just a stones throw away from the big fountain. (Check us out in the video below - it was a bit of a grey and cold one but absolutely worth it).
Getting food like this and eating it on a park bench lends something to the city that Glasgow doesn’t see all that much of - Street food vendors.
The Kelvin Way location is only 1 of 3 across Glasgow. There is also one on the top floor of The Buchanan Galleries at the food court and another at The Glasgow Fort. The Kelvin Way location is the original, so had to make a pilgrimage.
The Food (Το φαγητό)
So we each opted for the gyro: one chicken, one pork. It comes with a little onion & tomato, complimented nicely with some tzatziki sauce and finished off with some fries, all wrapped up in their large pita bread. We figured we’d get some add-ons so we went for some regular fries with a kind of peri salt and some halloumi fries. Don’t miss out on the halloumi, it’s really something else!
The price point for all this (2 gyros, halloumi fries, reg fries + an extra tzatziki sauce on the side) was less than £15. That’s pretty amazing considering you’d pay close to that amount for one person with all these other fancy kebab type shops on the high street these days.
Final Thoughts
I truly thought the food was great and it was a shame I was only now getting round to trying it out. It’s been a hotspot for Glasgow Uni students the past few years now as it’s pretty much right on campus. Easy to see how they’ve expanded so quickly and easily with the amount of popularity they’ve seen.
It’s a shame I didn’t get a chance to interview any of the guys. They were just so busy! That’s why the video looked a little different and had a bit more of a vlog feel. (Let me know what you think about that).
Get down and check them out. I would definitely recommend the Kelvin Way location if you’re spending your Saturday going for a walk in the West End or are out and about with a friend. Beware! The lines can sometimes get CRAAAAAZY, so make sure you get there before the rush around 1.30pm.
Major tip: Bring cash with you because they don’t take card. The closest card machine is at Tesco, which is about 5 mins walk away. Not ideal if you’re proper ready for a scran.
