Glasgow Coffee - Merchant City

The Merchant City district of Glasgow has long been known to have a certain upmarket quality about it, inviting the more “boujee” side of life to come and part with their funds. iCafe in Merchant City seems to have struck a balance that serves not only those more heavy in the wallet but also those struggling students and everything in between.

The Space

The versatility the cafe offers is noticeable in their product selection but also in the layout. The seating arrangements are spacious with tonnes of room for wheelchair users and parents lugging children around, booths and tables alike, there’s also an upstairs section with a totally different vibe. To be honest, that’s where the party’s at. A really cool layout that keeps the booths just secluded enough to feel like you’re not being gawked at while reading your favourite murder-mystery novel, but also open enough to still be able to do a bit of people watching. (Let’s not pretend, we all do it). There are tables too and other little spots to post up. Upstairs also hosts a meeting room space that is available to book. It’s private and definitely worth the fee if you have a big enough group. So if they ask if you’re sitting upstairs its a no brainer.

Cuppa?

When it comes to grabbing something from the bar, you won’t be short on options. Known for their show-stopping speciality Hot Chocolates, which I can’t say I’ve tried (soz) but if that’s your bag then get ready for a sugar-induced coma, iCafe brings a cup worthy of an instagram picture every time.

I prefer a more, normal drink… (Check the video to see how they made it).

“I’ve got a Caramel Latte for JP?”

These guys know how to do coffee. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t take you on a journey to the unreached parts of your mind or give you an outer body experience but it’s solid. Rock solid. The bean doesn’t overpower and leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth, like some places…okay, I won’t name names but it rhymes with Car-Ducks: let your imaginations run wild.

Staff

When thinking about outstanding customer service, look no further than the front desk. If you want your coffee made with a different kind of milk or need some honey for that tea, they got you covered. If you’re order isn’t exactly like it should be and you want something else instead, they got you covered. If you need someone to talk to because your girlfriend just dumped you and the Chai Latte just ain’t cutting it: well, you can try one of the staff but I cant say they’ll have you covered there. Probably friendly enough to stand and listen while you order an ice cream to cover up the hurt though.

What I’m trying to say is that they are so willing to go the extra mile and always seem so happy about being there. Definitely not always the case in Glasgow coffee shops but absolutely the case in this one. I wonder if there’s something in the coffee…

Personal suggestions & Final Thoughts

  • Any Hot Chocolate (because they all look a bit crazy and will most likely fulfil any sugar craving you have). I usually go for a flavoured latte, e.g. Caramel. (Don’t judge) The ratio of coffee to syrup is perfect unlike those people at Car-Ducks.

  • If you get a chance, grab a Beetroot Scone. I know it sounds wild but they’re UNREAL! Pretty sure they only have them at selected times but if you see a pink scone at the counter, be ready to have an experience.

  • One of the best things about this place is that it’s open until 9.45pm everyday. Great if you want to catch a friend after work and not have worry about the place closing 10 mins after you get there.

I just want to say that iCafe has not sponsored this nor have they provided any free coffee for any promotion. These views are my own. I wanted to share a coffee shop that I’ve found value in this past while and figured the people of Glasgow, and visitors alike, would like to know about it.
